Relevance of reading, understanding while working in an organization

Effective working in an organization is possible when each one should know:

· What is expected of them

· What they’re doing and for what purpose

· How they can improve

· How their work supports the organisation’s goals

They are also to improve upon:

· What to say

· Whom to say

· How to say

Here ‘say’ implies communication, both oral and

written.

In our day to day affairs in the family or in society, we do sign some related documents; in most cases, someone other than the reader might have read and understood the contents and related matters. However, the elders do advise that before signing, please do go through the documents, and know what document is being signed.

In an organization scenario, such reading prior to signing has to be made a habit.

This is true, even if the document meant to be signed and to be sent is prepared by self. Make sure of the correctness of all assertions, statements in the content, before signing, sending.

Often we sign documents or forms without reading, assuming that the wordings are of routine nature and standardized. Better do not take chances of getting into problems later.

This is all the more important when the papers to be signed are related to contracts and or other legal documents. Important documents are to be read before signing and then read again after signing up.

Have this practice even while sending normal official communications.

At one instance, a communication from my side went like this: “The Head of Accountant, as already mentioned, is clear” (it should have been Head of Account) …Thank God the Accountant did not revert on this!!!

“Intelligence is not expecting people to understand what your intent is; it is anticipating how it will be perceived.”

― Shannon L. Alder

While working in an organization, one should infer something, try to understand what is meant, after reading or hearing others and then only reach a conclusion. This comes only through practice.

This also implies the need of clear and open communication ensuring that everyone in the organization is on the same page about objectives, direction and expectations.

Miscommunication is another extreme, and this would lead to misunderstanding. It could result in mistrust, interpersonal rivalry, etc.

And hence, proficient reading and understanding in the workplace is a crucial skill every employee needs so they can do their job well. This is more important now, as the seniors give directions on what all to do etc. mostly by mail, whatsapp messages etc. The reading and comprehending the text is very important, to

These skills can ensure that there are fewer instances of miscommunication and misunderstanding in personal and professional interactions.
